So much life and sustainability has been reached. Your islands are beautiful and you are so proud to have been involved in making a population on your island. In the process you became more versed in the different types of careers that are needed to sustain a population. And of course the race to the finish was amazing. With Lathrop holding a strong lead in the competition, it was out of nowhere that North Pole High School came and took second place from West Valley. Probably the best part was the quality of work that students submitted. Thank you for participating in our grand adventures on Career Island.
Well, your islands will most likely sustain themselves for some time. You have mastered so many skills through strong leadership and teamwork. You are proud and you expect that all the people on your island are proud as well. However as you walk through people working on the island, there are few smiles and many look bedraggled. You know that they have been fed enough and you know that they have medical attention and houses to live in that are strong and safe. There are few issues with discipline as you have manged to provide a government and safety enforcement. Yet, people still look unhappy. In addition there has been an unusual rash of people dying earlier then expected and several suicides. You finally realize, after talking to several people, that they have been working very hard and they have not done much to celebrate or spend time with entertainment. So you quickly plan a festival with great amounts of entertainment. In addition, you have requested that several groups focus their attention on producing pieces of art, music, and movement. Finally you asked the aide of several engineers and scientists to develop ways for everybody to communicate across the island so you could spread the news about the upcoming festival. You know this will help provide people the needed break they were looking for and a chance for people to enjoy their work and progress.
25% Damage (25% of Population died) = No Research on Arts, A/V Technology and Communications, but you have researched Construction or Hospitality, Tourism and Marketing.
10% damage = Researched Arts, A/V Technology and Communications
With so many pieces in place and your island progressing, you suspect that you will succeed at your mission. But as everyone knows, continuing to learn, incorporate skills and apply them is what makes our human population adaptable.
So it has finally happened. Your island is producing many products from the raw materials but the materials are starting to be depleted. And many of the products are just being thrown away, building up a lot of trash on the island. Some people are no longer receiving products that are needed as some of the raw materials are becoming more scarce. Though no one is really dying or being injured yet, it is a problem that needs immediate attention. So the captain has decided that it is time to engage Science, Engineering, and Mathematics, as well as manufacturing to figure out a better way to conserve raw materials and design products that are reusable or made with other materials that are more renewable. So you take the individuals on the island and you place them into Science teams to study the current raw resources, Engineering teams to figure out how best to engineer the product and finally a Mathematics team to help support the mass production and specs for the Engineering team and the Science Team. All is working out well, for those islands that have spent the time to do research on Science, Engineering and Mathematics and Manufacturing. In fact, the additional research has allowed island populations to grow instead of receiving any kind of damage.
No Bonus (Nothing added to your population) = Did not research either Science, Engineering, and Mathematics or Manufacturing
25% Bonus (25% of your total population added to your population) = Researched either Science, Engineering, and Mathematics or Manufacturing.
50% Bonus (50% of your population added to your population) = Researched BOTH Science, Engineering, and Mathematics or Manufacturing.
All is working out well, for those islands that have spent the time to do research on Science, Engineering and Mathematics and Manufacturing. The islands are nearing sustainability and populations are growing comfortably. However the Captain begins to notice that people are not their usual happy selves. All work and no play.... So the Captain considers
It has finally occurred. With so many people on the island, it only took 1 person to contract a deadly virus that could spread very easy from person to person. The virus stars off as a common cold and then turns slowly into a high fever, respiratory issues and a heart attack. What is strange, however, many of the small villages have reported the corpses coming back to life. So much is needed to stop the spread of the virus and prevent the corpses from coming back to life. The question is how is it spreading and how was it contracted. Luckily you have researched about Education & Training and Health Sciences. The educators can continue to teach one another in the different villages how to reduce and prevent the spread of the virus and your research on Health Sciences allows for experimentation and testing to reach a cure and prevention of the virus.
50% Damage (50% of population died) = Did not research either Education & Training or Health Science at some point during the game
25% Damage (25% of Population died) = Researched either Education & Training or Health Science at some point during the game
10% damage = Education & Training AND Health Science at some point during the game
You have two choices below as well. Some of you have been doing additional research and have been able to really help your populations. So in addition to the damages above, you can choose from 1 of the 2 below.
Due to advances in Health Science (i.e. you have research Health Science in the past), your medical professionals have developed a cure quickly enough to prevent 20% of the damage done. Take off 20% of the damage you received above. If you received only 10% damage you will end up with no damage at all.
Because you have such a powerful and effective government (i.e. you have researched Government and Public Administration in the past), you have been able to quickly round up your people and quarantine the sick population. You have reduced your damage above by 15%. If you received only 10% damage you will end up with no damage at all.
Your island is coming along with population growth, organization and structure. However you as the captain begin to notice that your stocks of raw product are falling below the minimum and you begin to wonder what you could research to develop new products to create sustainable products.
Bartering: A student can barter their skills (ex: making powerpoints) or barter their knowledge by helping another group complete a task in exchange for a portion of their population or another students' skills or knowledge. In a barter agreement, both parties will agree on the trade. If a resolution can not be reached, they can propose the barter to the teacher and the teacher can choose to mediate or not mediate for a resolution. Trading: A student may trade their knowledge and skills with any other player or group, in exchange for population points from the Game master ranging in points from 1-100 points based on the roll of a d100 dice weighted down by 20 if over 50 (do not worry Game Master will do this). If the student has a very high quality trade then a +20 bonus will be added to the dice roll, and if an average job is done then no bonus points will be awarded. Your teacher will determine if you have done a high quality or low quality job and you will share this during your weekly post.
